Perseverance Pays: Part Two

never give up2My goal is providing the EKO service where people support people to be the best they can be.

There are times on my journey when I’ve wanted to quit. Some of those times have been not because I didn’t believe in my dream, but other things have come up in my life and I questioned myself as to whether I wanted to go on. Should I just settle back to an easier life? Other times I’ve stopped – reflected – and realised the path needs to change. Another path is needed to get us to where we’re going. Different support was needed. I’ve stopped and got my head into the right frame of mind to make a course correction in my journey. I’ve discovered along my journey that the dream has always been there but the paths to get there have been ones I never envisaged. Because the world is such a busy place, and there are so many ways to avoid doing what needs to be done, or get distracted I have found myself constantly tempted to do something else – another movie to watch, night out with mates (again!), spending money on the wrong things to get this going and then questioning myself. Whatever it is, I’ve been through most of them – but I still believe in the goal.

For me my goal is a worthy one. Without perseverance I might have just stopped completely, or continued persevering down a dead end path.

“After the thrill of the new journey has dimmed – perseverance get you there.” – Mike Overwater

How do you know if you should continue to persevere? This is a really good question – and there is no single right answer.

The first thing I would say, if you are in a situation where you are questioning yourself, ask yourself whether it is about persevering with the path or the destination? If it is the path, then stop and reflect on whether things can be done differently. Maybe it is what you’re doing, or who you’re doing it with that needs to be reviewed. “I’ve tried this approach seemingly forever and I just aren’t reaping the results – what am I doing that needs to change?” You may need input from an emotionally impartial supporter – not a “yes man”, but someone who can objectively review what you’re doing.

If it is the destination, stop and seek counsel from a supporter, reflect on what you want to achieve and why. This is more about how you feel about the destination. Do still feel like you want to go?

“A noble purpose inspires sacrifice, stimulates innovation and encourages perseverance.” – Gary Hamel

Too often I’ve seen people give up because they can’t see or feel a way forward. If they had changed their thinking – removed their rigid ingrained thoughts, perceptions of reality, and mental models on how things should be, then things could have been so much different. Persevering on the wrong path is a trap.

On my journey I’ve experienced this a lot. Why go on? Quit. As long as you feel you are making progress – persevere, and even when only hope exists – persevere.

“Obstacles can’t stop you. Problems can’t stop you. Most of all other people can’t stop you. The only one who stops you is yourself.” – Anonymous

At the end of the day you will get there. Perseverance will get you there if the goal is worthy, your heart and mind are in the right place, and you persevere.
