Choices, choices…

we all grow

Congratulate yourself.  You made a good choice.  I believe you’re reading this because you’ve chosen to take a huge step toward achieving the life you deserve by choosing to take positive steps in your own personal development and achievement of your life goals.  As with most things in life – starting is the hardest part. That was one of the things for me, but not the whole part.  I guess it never is one thing.  Life isn’t that simple.  This or that. Black or white.  Linear.  It is a richer – more complex tapestry.  So making decisions can be trickier.

Making the choice to start was the big thing.

I made a choice to start EKO.  EKO is my dream, but I had to choose to start and make it a reality.  I made a choice to write this today rather than doing any one of a number of things.  The number of conscious and unconscious choices we make each day is massive.  Really massive.

“Choice, not circumstances, determines your success”

Choices, choices.  Hmmm…
Many choices are habitual unconscious ones – and all have led us to where we are today.  We are a product of all the choices we’ve made to this very point.  I accept that we would not be able to function if we had to stop and consciously consider every single decision we have to make.  A level of auto-pilot is essential.  We couldn’t cope otherwise.  Ever been lost in thought and suddenly snap to, thinking, “how did I get here?”  You automatically do so many things, like drive to work, brush your teeth with whatever hand you normally use, cut your food in a particular way, switch off when something comes on the radio, tune in when something comes on the radio.  You operate in auto-pilot for so much of your life, and that is common.  However, if you want to change where you are in life, what you want to achieve, how you want to feel – you have to consciously choose to.   Unconscious thinking will only take you where you already are, or down paths you already know.

“We are our choices.”
Jean-Paul Sartre…Changes.
That is partly why change is so difficult.  We must consciously think about it.  And it is tiring.

Take charge of your life! How? Choose to.

Choose everything to make your life great.  Your attitude, what you’ll do today, what you’ll eat, whether you’ll be grateful, how you’ll react to what someone has said to you, who you’ll talk to, have a relationship with, watch on TV, think about, read … So many choices.  Most importantly choose what thoughts, attitudes and responses to situations you’ll have.  All affect where you’ll be and how you’ll feel tomorrow.

Often when we hear the word choice it makes us think about conscious choosing between one known thing and another.  But for me it doesn’t feel like that.

Most of the time we don’t know what the outcome of a choice we make will be.  Sure there may be some intended outcomes to our decisions, however often there are many unintended outcomes or consequences.  Therefore I believe you need to have the right intentions when making a decision.  I believe you can’t have a positive outcome from a negative thought or intention.  If you make a decision for your own positive outcome, but the underlying intentions are not necessarily all good, then the consequences will not be good.  Would you have made all the choices you’ve made in the past if you knew where you’d be.  I certainly would have made a few different ones.  But then I may not be here now.  Who knows?  I’m here now and choosing to make some positive changes for good intentions.

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning

Be accountable for your choices.
The big thing about decisions and choices, as I’ve said is – Consequences.  There is a consequence to anything you do.  It is a law of nature.  You can’t hide from it.  Make sure your intentions, and your heart are right and you can’t go wrong.  Sit and feel for a moment. You are here today, exactly where you are only because of the choices you’ve taken in the past.  Want to be somewhere else – choose other choices.

“Until a person can say deeply and honestly, “I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday,” that person cannot say, “I choose otherwise.”
Stephen R. Covey

We are the product of our previous choices.  This essentially is Karma, as the eastern philosophies say, or “you reap what you sow”.

I believe that when you make a decision – deep deep down you know whether it is the right thing for you or not.  A lot of unease comes from living a life where we know we are NOT making the choices we need to make to improve our life.  We’re hiding, in denial, scared of the consequences, going with the flow.  Whatever!  We are CHOOSING not to do something – it seems easier.  Yet it is so so so much worse choosing to do nothing (that’s the same as just doing nothing) than having the courage to make a tough positive choice.  Often we’ve built up barriers to our feelings, or are so conditioned to please others that we don’t stop and feel whether what we’ve done is right for us.  Stop, find a quiet space and consciously feel what is happening in your gut and heart – it will tell you.  Make a habit of this and you will get good at it.  I’m still practicing (a real novice), and am gathering some good support and tools to help me.  It’s wonderful.  Painful at times!

“Alice came to a fork in the road. ‘Which road do I take?’ she asked.
‘Where do you want to go?’ responded the Cheshire Cat.
‘I don’t know,’ Alice answered.
‘Then,’ said the Cat, ‘it doesn’t matter.”

Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Do Something.  Move.

Choices.  Choices.

“Let your choices reflect your hopes not your fears.”
– Nelson Mandela

This is a powerful statement.  Think about it.  EKO or EKOYOU is all about “echoing” or reflecting the greatness in yourself – and this is done by choosing hopes over fears.  I know I’ve been making choices based on fear, and keeping myself comfortable and secure, pleasing the comfortable side of myself and ensuring others are kept happy.  No more.  Like Dr Suess says, “say what you feel because those that matter don’t care, and those that care don’t matter”.  It is only when you push through and realise false safety and security does not serve you that you choose to make things different.

Choose hopes and dreams.  Choose against security and comfort.

You can do it.  Let’s explore how to do this together.  Do you know anyone who could do with hearing this today?  If you do, please pass it on.

Let’s keep it Real together,
